Acting Guide to UK Commons: Egypt’s Grand Mufti passes Death Sentences despite Human Rights’ violations
“Currently, thousands of women, men and students are subjected to enforced disappearance and detention in conditions that do not meet the minimum standards of human life.” His excellency Acting General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood “Ibrahim Munir” pointed out. “Under Allam’s supervision the number of death sentences and executions in Egypt has skyrocketed, with executions often carried out en masse.” He added.
His Excellency wrote to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom on the concerning matter of the visit of the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Mufti Shawki Allam, whose role entitles him to approve death sentences, to the United Kingdom.
He clarified: “The absence of fair trial guarantees in Egypt in general, including in cases resulting in death sentences, is especially concerning. Since July 2013, Egypt has undergone a period of political turbulence and polarization almost unrivalled in its modern history.”
Munir said in his letter that the government fails to pass any law on transitional justice, depriving the country of mechanisms that could help resolve controversial issues, white it continues to approve abusive new laws and restrict basic rights.
Munir further indicated that: “it is highly concerning to see the unconditional support given to Abdelfattah El Sisi by the UK government whilst many calculations place the UK as the country’s largest foreign investor.”
His Excellency implored the representatives to use their influence to advocate for the application of the rule of law and respect for human rights to representative of the state such as Mufti Allam. “It is becoming increasingly difficult to deny that Egypt is falling significantly short of these standards.” He added.
His Excellency ended his message welcoming any opportunity to further brief the representatives on the competing narratives within Egypt and discuss the the issue of escalating violations of human rights in Egypt, in line with the continuous campaigning for democracy in Egypt.
