About ‘Estrangement’ and ‘Mistreatment’ of Detainees.. “Injustice Heralds the Ruin of Civilization”

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) condemns the Egyptian authorities' “Taghreeb” –the Arabic word for “estrangement”– of dozens of prisoners of conscience at Badr Prison 1, separating and transferring them to the New Valley and Minya prisons. This procedure comes as punishment for the detainees who have been on a hunger strike since 25 May in protest against the ill-treatment and violation of the rights of prisoners and detainees practiced by the administration of most Egyptian prisons.

The MB stresses that the right to hunger strike is a legitimate means to defend material and moral interests, as stipulated in Article 29 of the Egyptian Constitution which does not deny the right to strike as a means of expression, in addition to the international agreements that Egypt has signed in this regard.

The Brotherhood also condemns the transfer of Dr Mohamed Ali Bishr, Minister of Local Government in President Mohamed Morsi's government and member of the MB Guidance Bureau, from hospital to prison after undergoing a kidney removal surgery, requiring hospital care, something which threatens his life. Meanwhile, hundreds of sick and elderly prisoners suffer from health crises due to lack of medical treatment, food, and power outages, which led to deterioration of the health situation of many of them and exposed them to numerous relapses.

The Muslim Brotherhood demands that the rights of all prisoners be secured in accordance with international human rights standards. Injustice is darkness both in this world and in the hereafter; and verily “injustice heralds the ruin of civilization”.
