MB: Killing, exiling or imprisoning opponents won’t make history, nor build a nation

Concerning the Lebanese government’s extradition of the free poet Abdulrahman Yousef al-Qaradawi and handing him over to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) expresses condemnation of the continued approach of challenging the feelings and will of the peoples, emphasizing its full solidarity with the poet al-Qaradawi until he restores his freedom.

Amid the escalating regional events, the changing conditions, and the switching roles, the Brotherhood wonders: Is there still a chance for interests to unite and for the will of the peoples and rulers to converge, to serve the Arab and Islamic nation?

Is it time to realize that killing, exiling, or imprisoning opponents will not prolong rule, nor will it make history or build a nation? What if the Arabs, both rulers and peoples, were united? Then the Arab nation would become a great nation and a power that could not be liable to dependency nor domination; rather it would be feared by everyone.

The kidnapping and imprisoning of Abdulrahman Yousef al-Qaradawi will not silence the voices of freedom, given the fact that freedom is an idea, and the idea cannot be imprisoned, executed, or killed. Also, imprisonment does not frighten those demanding freedom; rather it deepens the gap between the ruler and the ruled, and between the peoples, regimes, and governments.

In this context, we call on the UAE to reassess its position, considering the overall Arab landscape, and to release the poet Abdulrahman Yousef al-Qaradawi, son of the nation's eminent Faqih (Sari’a jurist) and great scholar Sheikh Yousef al-Qaradawi.

The MB calls on human rights organizations, cultural associations, political groups and parties to stand with the captive poet. It also launches an urgent appeal to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and world governments, especially the governments of the Republic of Turkey and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states – to seek to immediately release the poet Abdulrahman Yousef and ensure his safety and security.
