We stand in solidarity with Dr. Laila Soueif in her ordeal and demand the release of all political detainees
The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) expresses its full solidarity with Dr. Laila Soueif, who has been on an open hunger strike for 245 days in protest against the continued imprisonment of her son, the political activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, after serving a full five-year unjust prison sentence, with counting the pretrial detention period as part of the sentence, in accordance with Article 482 of the Egyptian Code of Criminal Procedure.
Amid this painful humanitarian situation, the MB stresses that the continued detention of Alaa Abdel Fattah after the expiration of his legal term is a violation of the principles of justice, and it holds the Egyptian regime fully responsible for the safety of his mother.
The Brotherhood demands the immediate release of Alaa Abdel Fattah and all political prisoners in Sisi’s prison and calls for putting an end to the era of detention centers and the crushing of freedoms from which the people have suffered for more than a decade.
Alaa Abdel Fattah’s case is just one aspect of a broader national tragedy experienced by thousands of Egyptian families during this era.
Thousands of mothers have lost their sons and daughters, who have been killed, detained, or missing. Meanwhile, thousands of wives have been facing years of deprivation and suffering because of the fact that their husbands have remained behind bars.
This collective human tragedy is tearing apart the social fabric and stamping this period of Egypt’s history with authoritarianism and social injustice.
May Allah Almighty protect Egypt and its people as free and honourable
