On the Anniversary of the Rabaa Massacre, Egypt Is in Need for Change More Than Ever

On the painful anniversary of the Rabaa al-Adawiya Massacre, and twelve years after the killing and arrest of tens of thousands of Egypt’s sons, the shed blood and tears have not yet dried.

The killing and arrest of opponents, along with failure, have become the hallmark of this dark era in Egypt's history. The wounds remain open in the hearts of free people; those who once dreamed of living in a free homeland governed by social justice and human dignity, a homeland that embraces all its citizens without any discrimination.

The peaceful Rabaa sit-in was not only a sit-in of the martyr President Mohamed Morsi’s party and his supporters, but rather a sit-in of the supporters of the democratic experiment, in a comprehensive national alignment of all those who championed the sovereignty of the people and in respect for their free will – just as the demonstrations fabricated to justify the military coup were a blatant image of minority tyranny and a backsliding from freedom. So, let the people know today who belongs to them and who boosts their status, and who oppresses them with respect to their security, freedom, and will.

Twelve years passed where the Egyptian people were promised prosperity and security, but on the contrary they reaped nothing but hunger, fear, injustice, oppression, plunder, and corruption; twelve years in which Egypt's wealth and resources were mortgaged in favour of others, until the very reasons that had led to the revolution have returned to their former glory. Today, Egypt is in greater need for change than ever.

It is painful for every Egyptian to see the genocide and total siege taking place today on the Gaza land, without being able to support our brothers in blood, religion, and humanity. This would not have happened were it not for the military coup that took place in 2013. Let us now realize that between the Rabaa Massacre and the ongoing genocide in Gaza there is a common thread and a single theme: that is resistance to the will of the people to liberate themselves from tyranny and occupation.

The Rabaa sit-in (that turned into a massacre) will remain immortal in the souls of the free people of the country and the world as a symbol of resilience and longing for freedom, sanctified by the blood of the righteous martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the happiness of others. Political prisoners will remain an example of the noblest categories of Egypt with respect to knowledge, morals, religion and patriotism, those who sacrificed the most precious of what they own so that Egypt may live free and dignified. History will record their sacrifices in pages of light, and with Allah will be pages that record "what they have put forth and what they left behind”.
