MB: Sentencing Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi to Life Imprisonment Is a Collective Punishment for Those Who Wanted Freedom
The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) condemns the sentences that have already been issued against Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi, the leader of the Ennahdha Movement, a Tunisian political) party, and former Speaker of the elected Tunisian Parliament (Assembly of Representatives of the People of Tunisia), as he was sentenced to life imprisonment, in addition to varying sentences against dozens of leaders of the Ennahda Movement, in a scene that reflects the excessive brutality, practiced against political opponents.
The Brotherhood stresses that these decisions were made against a man of stature in political Islamic thought, and a veteran politician who reached the speakership of the parliament through the free will of the Tunisian white revolution people, after the revolution. Ghannouchi has fought for decades for respect for democratic choice, political pluralism, national consensus, as well as the peaceful transfer of power, which makes him a symbol of moderate Islam in general and of the Tunisian political struggle in particular.
This makes the MB view these severe sentences as a consecration of the regression from democracy and a collective punishment for a people who wanted life, where talking about the age of the man who is over eighty four, and about his extremely poor health conditions becomes redundant in the face of the magnitude of the event and its effects.
To conclude, the Muslim Brotherhood calls on the Tunisian authorities to reconsider those severe "sentences" and work to provide guarantees of justice, and to refrain from using the judiciary against political opponents. The MB also values the serious dialogue between the Tunisian national forces to reach a roadmap for saving the democratic path established by the Jasmine Revolution, to close this dark chapter and lead Tunisia to the shore of freedom, democracy and independent development.
May Allah Almighty protect Tunisia and its people from all harm.
