On the Seventh Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Egypt's First Elected Civil President

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the martyrdom of President Dr. Mohamed Morsi, the first civilian president elected by the free will of the people in the history of modern Egypt; the man who shouldered the nation's responsibility at a pivotal moment and expressed the conscience of the 25 January Revolution (2011) and the aspirations of Egyptians for freedom, dignity, justice, and national independence.

The martyred President Mohamed Morsi has been a symbol of popular legitimacy, a voice of free will, and a symbol of loyalty to the will of the people, ever since he took the oath before the Egyptian people in Tahrir Square. He was a model in respecting public freedoms, political pluralism, and opening up the public sphere – values that Egypt has lost under the weight of autocratic rule since 2013, and whose absence its people are still paying the price for today.

The martyred President also embodied the meaning of true patriotism, as he did not compromise on his people’s right to freedom and dignity, nor did he give up on the independence of national decision-making, nor did he abandon the issues of his nation; and he remained so until he met his Lord, adhering to his principles, and loyal to his homeland and nation.

The martyred President Mohamed Morsi passed away on this very day, 17 June 2019, after years of being held in solitary confinement and deprived of his most basic human and legal rights and denied proper medical care until he descended as a martyr inside the courtroom so that he could meet Allah as patient, steadfast, resigned to His will, and content.

The anniversary of President Morsi’s martyrdom will remain present in the memory of the nation and in the conscience of the free people. He will remain a symbol of sincere patriotism, free will and national independence, and he will remain a noble expression of the will of a people who wanted and deserved a free and dignified life.

May Allah have mercy on the martyred President, and reward him for his service to his country, his people, and his nation, and make his memory a beacon for all those striving for freedom, justice, dignity, and yearning for change.

In fact. the lives of men, with their stances and contributions, will remain part of the memory of nations, from which generations will draw inspiration for the meanings of patience, steadfastness, and responsibility; and Allah alone knows what is hidden in people's hearts and rewards every person for his deeds, for the Hereafter alone is the appointed time for judgment and recompense.

Allah Almighty says in Surat Al-Ahzab: ﴾Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration. ﴿ (Al-Ahzab: 23)
