Dr Salah Abdel-Haq Participates in the "Unity of the Moderate Ummah" Conference and Meets Islamic Scholars and Leaders
Dr. Salah Abdel-Haq, Acting General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, attended the "Unity of the Moderate Ummah: From Foundational Principles to a Charter of Unity" conference. The event took place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 28 to 30 October 2026. It brought together scholars, intellectuals, and heads of Islamic institutions and organisations from more than 30 countries to explore ways to strengthen the unity of the *Ummah* (the global Muslim community) and foster cooperation among its components.
Dr. Salah Abdel-Haq’s participation was in response to an official invitation from Dr. Ali Muhyiddin al-Qaradaghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, to attend the conference and contribute to its proceedings, hosted on the Island of Democracy and Freedoms in Istanbul.
His participation was particularly significant given his leadership role within a major Islamic movement—a movement marked by a broad grassroots presence, a profound intellectual and proselytising (da'wah) impact spanning both time and geography, and strong, positive relations with other Islamic movements and institutions. This engagement aligns with ongoing efforts to promote mutual understanding and cooperation across the *Ummah*.
On the sidelines of the conference, Dr. Salah Abdel-Haq met with several participating Islamic scholars and leaders. They exchanged views on key issues facing the *Ummah* and discussed the need to expand avenues for dialogue, cooperation, and joint action. The conference focused on raising individual and collective awareness of the importance of unity, developing practical approaches to address the root causes of division and conflict, embedding a methodology of moderation and balance, and fostering cooperation and integration among Islamic institutions and organisations—all while respecting the diversity of scholarly interpretation (*ijtihad*) and the foundational principles that unite the community.
Furthermore, the conference sought to formulate a framework for comprehensive grassroots unity, as well as a vision for political unity rooted in a shared creed and common interests. A key objective was the drafting of the "Charter of the Moderate Ummah" (Mithaq al-Ummah al-Wasat), envisioned as a unifying document that reaffirms shared Islamic constants, helps eliminate the sources of conflict, strengthens cooperation, and opens new horizons for joint action toward the unity of the *Ummah*.
