The Eighth General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood

Born: 7th August 1943

Badie is married to Somaya El-Shenawy. Her father was a pilot. His name is Muhammad Ali El-Shenawy, one of the first generation of the Muslim Brotherhood. Badie has 3 children, one of them was killed in 2013.

 

Childhood and Early Life 

Mohamed Badie Abdel Majeed Mohamed Sami was born in the city of El-Mahalla El-Kubra on the 7th  August 1943. He graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Cairo University in 1965. He was appointed as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Asyut in the same year.

Badie finished his master's degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1977 from Zagazig University, and a PhD in 1979 from the same university. He has obtained the degree of Assistant Professor in 1983 from Zagazig University and worked as a professor of Veterinary Medicine in 1987 at Cairo University in Beni Suef branch. Badie was chosen as the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Beni Suef for Postgraduate Studies and Research Affairs in 1993. He was also selected as the Chairman of the Association of Pathology and Clinical Pathology of Faculties of Veterinary Medicine in Egypt.

 

 

Joining Muslim Brotherhood

In 1959, Badie met Dr. Muhammad Suleiman Al-Najjar, a member of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, who invited him to join the Muslim Brotherhood. Badie was active within the Muslim Brotherhood at that time until he was arrested along with Sayyid Qutb. After his release, he started to work hard on the Muslim Brotherhood’s reunion in El-Mahalla. Badie was in charge of the Education Department in the Muslim Brotherhood and was elected as a member of the Guidance Office of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1993. In 2010, he was elected as the Eighth General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood. 

 

Times of Hardship

Badie was arrested in 1965 with Sayyid Qutb and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was then released on the 4th April 1974 but was arrested again in 1998 for several months. 

In 1999, Badie was arrested among a large number of trade unionists  and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment . After the military coup and Rabaa massacre, Badie was arrested again on the 20th  August 2013 where he is still behind bars.
