Abul-Futouh: Gamal Abdel-Salam’s Arrest an Offense to Relief Activists
Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Medical Doctors and Member of the MB Executive Bureau Dr. Abdul-Mon"em Abul-Futouh criticized the arrest of Dr. Gamal Abdel-Salam, Head of the Emergency and Relief Committee in the Union, considering it "a big offense and inhumane message to any humanitarian worker."
Abul-Futouh pointed out that Dr. Gamal Abdel-Salam had been working in the field of humanitarian relief for 20 years receiving the first prize in the field from the Union of Arab Medical Doctors adding that his work extended to several regions of the Arab world including Palestine, Somalia, Sudan, and Algeria.
Abul-Futouh further affirmed that Dr. Gamal had not been involved in any political activities although it is no justification for detaining those who are politically active.
Regarding whether his detainment had any link with the siege on Gaza, Abul-Futouh explained that no doubt when 1.5 million are besieged, relief organizations will play their humanitarian role and lend their help adding that even in wars food and drinks are permitted.
Abul-Futouh further condemned Egypt"s manner in dealing with aids going to Gaza stressing that they are purely humanitarian and free of any political implications.
The Egyptian security apparatus had arrested Dr. Gamal Abdel-Salam late Monday night, after breaking into his house and barbarously searching it.
