The sentence against the revenant General Guide and former ministers and MPs is essentially politicized, and we demand prosecution before an independent judiciary

At a time when the Egyptian citizen is suffering from the abject poverty, high prices, and declining standards of living as a result of the failed policies of the ruling regime, and while everyone is scrambling to find ways out of the economic, political, and security crises created by the Egyptian regime over the course of more than 10 years, this regime is still persecuting its opponents and using prisons and detention centres and killing in the name of the law, on charges of ‘establishing a group in violation of the law and practicing terrorism’.

Today, an exceptional judicial chamber without jurisdiction issued an unfair death sentence against the revenant Muslim Brotherhood General Guide Dr Mohamed Badie and seven others, in addition to other life and aggravated prison sentences, in the case known in the media as the “Platform Incidents”, where the Emergency State Security Court (ESSC), which the regime established specifically to try political opponents after 2013, issued its verdict today, taking into mind that the ESSC rulings are not subject to appeal.

The Brotherhood condemns this sentence and stresses that the court violated the guarantees of a fair trial, as there was no crime, no criminal evidence, and no witnesses, except for a prosecution witness from National Security Service officers. The court also did not enable the defence team to summon defence witnesses, nor did it allow them to meet with their clients, in addition to depriving the defendants of trial before their natural judge. These violations have long been denounced by Egyptian and international human rights organizations that have demanded the annulling of the verdicts resulting from them.

The MB considers the ruling victimization of innocent people, and demands an impartial prosecution be conducted before a fair and independent judiciary. The MB confirms that this case is essentially political, and that the group’s legitimacy exist by virtue of history, law and reality, and was confirmed by electoral entitlements that brought about a legitimate, democratically elected civilian president and government. The positions and titles of the defendants confirm that the case is political, as they included ministers, members of parliament, politicians and scholars.

Allah Almighty has prohibited Himself injustice and has made injustice forbidden among His slaves; and injustice heralds the ruin of civilization and the destruction of societies. Whenever injustice emerges among a people, it causes their destruction and hastens their punishment.}Such is the punishment of your Lord when He seizes the (population of) towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His punishment is painful (and) severe. {(Hud: 102)

Dr. Salah Abdel Haq
