We support the political detainees’ hunger strike and hold authorities responsible for their lives
The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) reiterates its full support for the political detainees’ hunger strike at Badr Prison (3/Sector 2), protesting against the denial of their most basic human rights throughout their years of detention, most notably the right to receiving visits from their wives, children, parents, and all their relatives.
In this regard, the MB holds the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for the violation of these rights and for their safety. The Brotherhood also supports the families of these detainees politically, via media, and through legal action until they obtain their due rights.
The Brotherhood emphasizes that these detainees are not criminals who have committed crimes punishable by law. Rather, they are among the nation's elites and noble people, including scholars, former ministers, former members of parliament, representing the people, as well as university professors. They are men who have sacrificed their lives in the service of their country and were arrested because of their political opinions and positions. They have never practiced or advocated violence. Moreover, reports from local and international human rights organizations confirm that their trials lacked standards of justice and their treatment fell short of humane standards.
The rights demanded by the detainees on hunger strike are not a gift or a favor from anyone, but rather fundamental human rights stipulated in international laws, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and all Egypt’s binding agreements. These rights are also stipulated in the Egyptian Constitution (Articles 51, 54, 55, 56, and 93), as well as the Egyptian Prison Regulations. They are also rights that are unanimously recognized by the human conscience, particularly the right to dignity, freedom, humane treatment, and to receiving normal visits from relatives.
The MB affirms its full support for the detainees and their legitimate hunger strike. We call on every person of conscience in Egypt and around the world to support the detainees and their families for achievement of their just demands.
We also call on the Egyptian judiciary, the Public Prosecution, the National Council for Human Rights, and all Egyptian and international human rights organizations to work to:
- Enable detainees to exercise their natural right to receiving visits from and contacting their families, and to be treated humanely and with dignity in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
- End solitary confinement and unjustified security restrictions.
- Enable human rights organizations and judicial authorities to visit prisons and investigate the truth.
- Protect hunger strikers from the brutality of the authorities, who threaten their lives in order to prompt them to end their hunger strike.
To conclude, the Muslim Brotherhood affirms that excessive injustice and harsh treatment brings about the ruin of civilization, and that its ultimate consequence is shame and evil. Prophet Mohamad (peace be upon him) says: “… And, the supplication of one who has been wronged is raised by Allah up to the clouds on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah Almighty says, ‘By My Might I will help you (against the wrongdoer) even if it is after a while.’”
May Allah protect our loyal patriotic detainees as a treasure for Egypt, and may He Almighty protect Egypt from all harm.
