MB Press Release Regarding Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi’s Health and Humanitarian Situation
The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is following up on the circulating news regarding the health condition of Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi, the former Tunisian Parliament Speaker and one of the most prominent moderate intellectual and political Islamic figures across the Islamic world after being repeatedly transferred to hospital in recent weeks, the last of which was on 29 July, just two days after he was returned from hospital to prison.
Mr. Ghannouchi, who is eighty-five years old, is a well-known intellectual and political Islamic figure, who has for decades presented a model of Islamic thought and political struggle, making him worth of great appreciation and respect, and a subject of human and rights interest that transcends the borders of the Republic of Tunisia.
The MB views the continued detention of Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi, despite his old age and his suffering from several chronic illnesses that necessitated his transfer to the hospital several times recently, amid reports of his isolation and the denial of his family and lawyer's right to check on him, as a matter that requires responsible action to preserve Sheikh Ghannouchi’s life and dignity.
In view of the report of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which deemed the detention of Mr. Ghannouchi to be arbitrary and called for his immediate release, the Muslim Brotherhood appeals to all concerned political and human rights parties in Tunisia and abroad to work for Mr. Ghannouchi’s immediate release as a political detainee who has the full right to freedom and life.
The MB also appeals to the Tunisian authorities to prioritize humanitarian and legal considerations, and to work to enable his family and lawyer to exercise their rights, and his doctors to monitor his health condition, in order to avoid irreversible humanitarian consequences.
May Allah protect Sheikh Rached Ghannouchi, and may He Almighty Protect Tunisian people as Free and Honorable on their land
