MB: Press Freedom Is in Danger.. And Use of "Muslim Brotherhood" As a Scapegoat Is Unacceptable

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) condemns the ongoing repressive measures against journalists and media professionals in Egypt, the that themost recently of which was the detention of six journalists working for the media platform of “Matsda2sh” (Arabic for ‘Don’t Believe it’) and the leveling of false, repetitive charges against them to justify such violations.

The deliberate act of leveling accusations of Muslim Brotherhood affiliation (against whoever) – and repeating them again and again following every violation against a free journalist or independent voice to justify shutting down the public sphere and silencing dissent – is a tactic that no longer fools anyone.

Furthermore, turning affiliation with any Egyptian national faction into a pretext for arrest and curtailment of freedoms has met with widespread national and popular rejection.

While the Brotherhood renews its full solidarity with all the oppressed in our beloved Egypt, it completely denies the false accusations contained in the statement of the Egyptian Ministry of Interior.

Verification of news and statements, conveying the pulse of the street, and voicing citizens' concerns – all of this lies at the very core of essential journalistic work.

The MB believes in the mission of a free press and free media, viewing them as a "fourth estate" that contributes to balancing relations between states and societies and serves as a fundamental guarantee for the development of democratic practice among peoples.

We believe that Egypt’s interest – both as a society and a state – demands abandoning the approach of curtailing freedoms and suppressing free expression. Such an approach neither serves the people nor builds the nation.

Instead, it exacerbates tensions and undermines the foundations of stability and coexistence that all  require.
